5th March Zab Judah v Kaizer Mabuza
Vacant IBF light-welterweight title
Prudential Center, Newark, New Jersey
New York’s ‘Super’ Zab Judah will have one eye on April 16’s Amir Khan v Paul McCloskey WBA light-welterweight title fight when he goes head-to-head with South Africa’s Kaizer Mabuza for the vacant IBF title on Saturday night. For the ever controversial 33-year-old, it is one last chance to show that he belongs at boxing’s top table. If Judah prevails and reclaims the title he first held in February 2000 he will have his sights set on a major unification battle with the likes of Khan or division number one Timothy Bradley.
19th March Lucian Bute v Brian Magee
IBF super-middleweight title
Bell Centre, Montreal
After 12 years as a professional, in a career that has yielded British, European and IBO honours, Lisburn’s Brian Magee finally gets a crack at a recognised World title when he faces Canadian-based, Romanian IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute on March 19. Magee’s shot at the big time was to have come much sooner, indeed he was scheduled to challenge Welsh legend Joe Calzaghe for the WBO title at Belfast’s King’s Hall as far back as March 2005, but the bout was called off at 24 hours notice due to a legal challenge from Calzaghe’s then No1 challenger Mario Veit.
But with 35-year-old Magee now enjoying an Indian summer to his career, which saw the southpaw claim the European title in January 2010, he has forced his opportunity and is confident of taking it.
The challenge that awaits Magee is substantial. Bute is tall (6’2”), like Magee is a southpaw, and as his unbeaten 27-0 (22KO) record implies he can punch a bit as well. What’s more, Bute’s record highlights that he can stop opponents early and late. For many fight fans, Bute is the best super-middleweight in the World – indeed Boxrec, the independent online ranking system ranks him ahead of all other 12st stars, including Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Dirrell, Andre Ward and WBO champion Robert Stieglitz, who Magee had initially been rumoured to be challenging. Going into Bute’s adopted hometown is unlikely to faze Magee especially on St Patrick’s weekend when a large Irish support is expected to make their way to the arena.
26th March Dmitry Pirog v Javier Francisco Maciel
WBO middleweight title
DIVS, Ekaterinburg, Russia
Big, strong and unbeaten, there are many who believe that Russia’s WBO champion Dmitry Pirog may well be the best 11st 6lb boxer on the planet.
That, despite the 30-year-old having boxed all but two of his 17 professional contests in his home country. The bout that made the outside world sit up and take note was last July, when boxing in Las Vegas for the first time, Pirog blasted out the talented and then unbeaten American Daniel Jacobs in five rounds, claiming the vacant WBO title in the process.
Pirog now returns to Russia, where he will be dealing with Argentinean challenger Javier Francisco Maciel, 18-1 (12KO) on March 26.
World Series Boxing
In the past boxing may have been the most individual of sports, but World Series Boxing (WSB) has changed all that. What’s more, WSB has blurred the growing lines between boxing’s amateur and professional codes.
The boxers retain their Olympic status but the boxing is done without headguards or vests and contests embrace professional style scoring in 5x3 minute bouts.
In WSB, ten teams (LA, Memphis, Mexico City, Miami, Astana, Baku, Beijing, Pohang, Istanbul, Milan, Moscow and Paris) are divided into three conferences (Americas, Asia and Europe) to battle it out in league matches from November until March. A WSB match consists of five bouts in five weight divisions, namely bantamweight (54kg), lightweight (61kg), middleweight (73kg), light-heavyweight (85kg) and heavyweight (91+kg).
The top four teams (three conference winners and best runner up) then progress to the semi-final and final stages which take place in April and May and the overall champion is crowned.
Individual finals between the two highest ranking boxers in each of the five weight divisions are also contested in May.
Each team consists of between 10 and 20 boxers with at least three and up to six foreign boxers on each team. As such, although Ireland is not home to a team, there is considerable Irish interest in WSB - with Olympians Kenny Egan and John Joe Joyce representing Miami and Paris respectively whilst Ulstermen Eamon O’Kane and Tommy McCarthy are signed to Milan.
In March, Setanta will televise three WSB fixtures live with McCarthy and O’Kane’s Milan and John Joe Nevin’s Paris clashing in a St Patrick’s special on March 18.
Live fixtures in March
Friday 11th March 8pm Paris v Moscow
Friday 18th March 8 pm Milan V Paris
Saturday 19th March 3am Mexico City v Memphis
All this great live boxing content plus classic fights every week on Fight Sports Greatest Classics.

IABA UPDATE (OPEN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS)
"Open Youth Championships" - Bernard O'Neill
AIBA World Youth champion Joe Ward has acknowledged that February will be a key month in his remarkable young career.
The Moate BC (Co Westmeath) light-heavyweight will be aiming to claim his second title in a row at the Open Youths Championships, the semi-finals and finals of which will be decided at the National Stadium in Dublin this Friday and Saturday.
And then the 17-year-old, who won an AIBA World Junior title in Armenia in 2009, will turn his focus to the Elite National Senior Championships which glove off at IABA headquarters on February 11th.
Ward confirmed recently that he will be entering the 2011 Elite Championships, a decision which could see him meet 2008 Olympic silver-medalist Ken Egan, who will be aiming for an unprecedented 11th title on the trot.
However, the two-time World champion, who has been training and sparring at the Repton club in London - a former club of three-time Irish Senior champion and 2004 Olympian Andy Lee - over the last few weeks, is not looking beyond the weekend's Open Youth Championships semi-final with Dunboyne BC (Dublin) prospect James Corcoran.
The winner of the Ward/Corcoran three-rounder will face John Joe McDonagh of the Crumlin BC in Saturday's 81Kg final.
"I won't be taking anything for granted in the Open Youths, especially not a semi-final. My target is to win my second Youth title at the weekend and then my focus will turn to the Senior Championships , said Ward.

I'm prepared for the challenges ahead. All my homework is done now and I'm ready to rock and roll and hopefully my ability will see me through."
Meanwhile, a marathon session of Open Youth Championships semi-finals will be decided on Friday evening at the home of Irish boxing.

Boxing begins at 7pm on Friday and Saturday. The weigh-ins will be held between 8.30am and 9.30am on both days at the National Stadium.

IABA NEWS - Joyce joins Miami in WSB
IRISH AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION
Joyce Joins Miami in WSB - Bernard O'Neill
Irish senior champion John Joe Joyce has signed with Miami Gallos in the World Series of Boxing (WSB).
The 23-year-old welterweight flew out to the USA this morning (January 10th) to team up with the Florida side in the WSB Americas group.
Joyce, nicknamed Triple J, will join his Irish team-mate Ken Egan at Miami Gallos on a one year contract.
The four-time Irish senior champion and Egan were part of the five man squad which claimed Ireland's only medals (one silver, two bronze) at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Joyce, who boxes out of the St Michael's Athy club in Kildare, was eliminated on a countback at the last-16 stage in Beijing to Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic who went on to win gold in the light-welterweight category.
"I'm looking forward to meeting the Miami team and hopefully I can do well for Miami when I'm there. The World Series of Boxing is a new direction for me and it promises to be very exciting,"
said Joyce, who claimed a bronze medal at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool.
Miami Gallos are competing in a 4-team WSB group which includes Los Angeles Matadors, Memphis Force and Mexico City Guerreros.
LA are presently top of the table, four points ahead of Miami. Both sides are due to meet in back-to-back fixtures on January 13th/27th.
The winners in the Americas, Asian and European WSB groups - which will be decided over 12 matches - plus the best runners up qualify for the WSB semi-finals.
Meanwhile, John Joe Nevin's Paris United side and Milan are joint top of the European group.
Both sides recorded convincing 4-1 wins over Istanbulls and Kremlin Bears (Moscow) last weekend and are tied on 13 points after five matches ahead of back-to-back meetings this month.
Paris have a slight two bout advantage - WSB boxing's equivalent of goal difference - at the top of the table.
Belfast middleweight Eamon O'Kane joined Milan last week and could be selected to meet Paris, who will have Nevin in their line up, when both sides clash in Paris this Friday night.

IABA AWARDS BY BERNARD O'NEILL
Katie Taylor and the European Senior Championships medal winning quintet of Paddy Barnes, Darren O'Neill, Eric Donovan, Tyrone McCullagh and Ken Egan shared the Elite Achievement Award as the IABA celebrated another outstanding year at its Annual Awards Night at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel in Dublin last night.
Taylor, the current World, European, EU and Irish champion and AIBA World female boxer of the year, and Barnes, the reigning European, Commonwealth and Irish champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, also shared the Best Overall Boxer award.
Current AIBA World Youth and Olympic Youth champions Joe Ward and Ryan Burnett had their remarkable achievements in 2010 recognised, while the Ryston BC in Kildare scooped the Best club and Best coaches awards in a year which sees the IABA celebrate its 100th birthday.

Athy lightweight. "It's always special to receive an award like this and to receive it in the Association's centenary year is extra special."
Meanwhile, Jim McCourt was inducted into the IABA Hall of Fame.
McCourt, boxing out of the Immaculata BC in Belfast, won a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1965 European Championships. He also claimed Commonwealth gold in Jamaica in 1966 and seven Irish senior titles at three different weights in a stellar career spanning the 1960s and 1970s.
